Still Got Game? Tampa Bay Active Life Games Invite the 50+ Crowd Back Into the Competition |

If you thought organized competition was something you had to leave behind years ago, Hillsborough County has a message for you:
Not so fast.
Registration is underway for the 45th Annual Tampa Bay Active Life Games, an Olympics-style competition created for adults 50 and older.
And you don't need to be a lifelong athlete to participate. Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation says the games welcome participants across a range of skill and fitness levels, combining exercise, friendly competition and an opportunity to meet other active adults from around the Tampa Bay area.
17 Activities — One Registration Fee
This year's games begin September 28 and continue through October 9, with events held at locations throughout Hillsborough County.

With different divisions and formats within several sports, the county counts 17 activities in this year's program.
The registration fee is $35 per participant, and that single fee allows you to enter multiple events rather than paying separately for each competition.
You Don't Have to Be a Serious Athlete
This may be the most important thing to know.
The Active Life Games aren't reserved for elite competitors. Hillsborough County describes the event as being open to people with varying levels of fitness and experience. So if you've been playing competitive pickleball for years, there's a place for you. But if you'd simply like a reason to become more active, meet some people and try something different, you're welcome too.
The games have been held since the 1980s and attract hundreds of adults 50 and older.
It Starts With a Torch Lighting
Opening day is Monday, September 28.
The Torch Lighting Walk and Opening Ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m. at Barksdale Senior Center in Tampa.
Competition then gets underway with shuffleboard and horseshoes that morning.
Over the following days, events move to facilities around Hillsborough County, including pickleball at Mango Park and Northlakes Park, track and field at Gaither High School, basketball at Ruskin Park and bowling at Pinchasers.
Closing ceremonies are scheduled for October 9 at Northdale Park & Recreation Center.
And Yes, You Can Take It Further
For participants with a competitive streak, there's another incentive.
The Tampa Bay Active Life Games serve as a regional qualifier for the Florida Senior Games. In most qualifying events, competitors need to finish among the top five in their age group and gender to advance.
But qualifying for state competition certainly doesn't have to be your reason for showing up.
For plenty of participants, getting active and having some fun may be victory enough.
