For generations of Brandon residents, the local library has changed right along with the community.

It began modestly in 1960, when the Brandon Women's Club set aside space in its North Moon Street clubhouse for about 1,000 books. A dedicated Brandon Branch Library followed on Robertson Street in 1968. Then, as Brandon continued to grow, the community eventually got the 25,000-square-foot Brandon Regional Library that opened on Vonderburg Drive in 1991.

Now another major chapter is getting closer.

Hillsborough County is moving forward with plans for an entirely new Brandon library, and the project has reached the procurement phase—one of the final major steps before construction can begin.

According to the county's latest project information, construction is currently expected to start in late 2026, with completion targeted for mid-2027.

A New Home on Lumsden Road

The replacement library will be built on property the county previously acquired along the north side of West Lumsden Road, west of Parsons Avenue.

Plans call for an approximately 25,000-square-foot building, roughly equivalent to the size of today's library, but with an important difference: the new facility is being designed so it can eventually expand to approximately 35,000 square feet as Brandon's needs grow.

The current Phase 2 project carries a budget of $22.4 million. County records break that down to approximately $21.19 million for construction and about $1.21 million for design and land-related costs within this phase. The earlier acquisition of the replacement site was handled through a separately funded county project.

That distinction matters: the $22.4 million figure commonly associated with the new library does not represent the entire amount the county has invested in getting the replacement project to this point.

Brandon Has Outgrown Libraries Before

There's something familiar about this story.

Brandon's first dedicated library building opened on Robertson Street in 1968. It was expanded during the 1970s, but continued population growth eventually made an even larger facility necessary.

The solution was the current Brandon Regional Library at 619 Vonderburg Drive, which opened March 10, 1991. The two-story building became one of the original regional libraries in the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System.

Today, it shares the Sandy Rodriguez Center with Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association and offers far more than shelves of books. The library provides meeting spaces, technology and other community services and has long served as one of Brandon's cultural gathering places.

Thirty-five years after that building opened, Hillsborough County is preparing for Brandon's next library.

The Timeline Has Changed

Residents who have followed the replacement project for several years may remember earlier completion dates and lower cost estimates.

That's because large capital projects evolve as they move through planning, design and procurement.

Hillsborough County's current Capital Improvement Program now places the Brandon project at $22.4 million, with construction beginning late this year and finishing around the middle of 2027.

The county specifically cautions that both the project's cost and schedule are its current best estimates and remain subject to change.

So while Brandon is getting closer to seeing construction equipment arrive, residents should consider the present dates targets rather than guarantees.

One Big Question Remains

There's another part of the story the Crosstown Journal will be watching closely:

What happens to the current Brandon Regional Library after the new library opens?

The county's current replacement-project information describes the new facility, its budget and its construction schedule, but does not specify the eventual disposition or future use of the existing Vonderburg Drive library space.

That's particularly noteworthy because the current building isn't occupied by the library alone. Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association also operates from the Sandy Rodriguez Center.

Until Hillsborough County provides a current plan for what comes afterward, we aren't going to speculate.

What Brandon Residents Should Know

For now, the important development is that this project is no longer merely an idea on a long-range wish list.

Planning is complete. Design is complete. The project is in procurement. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026.

And if the current timetable holds, Brandon residents could be walking into their new library sometime around mid-2027.

For a community whose first library consisted of roughly 1,000 books tucked inside the Brandon Women's Club, that's quite a journey.

From Moon Street to Robertson Street, from Vonderburg Drive to the future site on Lumsden Road, Brandon's library has repeatedly changed as Brandon itself has changed.

The next chapter is getting ready to begin.
