Road closures, detours and around-the-clock tunneling are coming as a 26-mile regional water project makes its way through Brandon. |

If you've driven around Brandon lately and wondered why there are construction barriers, closed streets and heavy equipment seemingly everywhere, part of the answer is much bigger than another road repair.
A new regional drinking-water pipeline is being built through Brandon.
The South Hillsborough Pipeline will stretch approximately 26 miles from Tampa Bay Water's Regional Surface Water Treatment Plant in Brandon into southern Hillsborough County.
And when it's finished, it will be capable of carrying up to an additional 65 million gallons of drinking water every day.
But before that water begins flowing, Brandon residents are going to be living with construction for quite some time. Why Is This Being Built?
The short answer is growth.
Tampa Bay Water says south-central Hillsborough County is experiencing population growth that's creating demand for substantially more drinking water.
Its projections estimate that by 2050, Apollo Beach's population could double, Wimauma's could more than triple, Riverview could grow more than 30%, and Brandon's population could increase by approximately 35%.
The new pipeline is designed to help the regional water system keep up.
It begins at the regional surface-water treatment facility here in Brandon, connects with Hillsborough County's Lithia Water Treatment Plant and continues to a new county connection point near Balm and Balm Riverview roads. What's Happening in Brandon Right Now?
This is where the project becomes very local.
Construction is currently taking place around Victoria Street, North and South Moon avenues, Falkenburg Road and other locations along the route.
On Victoria Street, open-trench construction is progressing east from North Kings Avenue.
The sidewalk within the active construction zone east of North Kings is currently closed, and intersection crossings at North Knights Avenue and North Moon Avenue will also close as construction reaches them.
That's particularly important for families with students at nearby Brandon High School.
Students walking or bicycling to school from east of North Kings Avenue are being directed south to West Sadie Street, then north on North Kings Avenue and west on Victoria Street. Vehicle access to the student and teacher parking lots remains available from the west using Limona Road and Meade Street. September 9 Brings Another Change
There's an important date Brandon drivers should put on the calendar.
September 9.
According to the project's current construction schedule, North Knights Avenue and North Moon Avenue are scheduled to close at Victoria Street beginning September 9.
Then comes something most of us will never see—even though it will happen directly underneath one of Brandon's busiest roads. They're Tunneling Under Brandon BoulevardOn September 9 and 10, crews are scheduled to conduct 24-hour tunneling operations beneath Brandon Boulevard at North and South Moon avenues.
Most of the pipeline is being installed using traditional open trenches.
But approximately two miles of the 26-mile route will be tunneled, allowing crews to get beneath major roads, railroads and waterways while reducing surface disruption. There are 17 tunneling locations along the project, including Brandon Boulevard at Moon Avenue.
Crews are using trenchless techniques including micro-tunneling and horizontal directional drilling.
With micro-tunneling, a remotely controlled boring machine works underground between excavated shafts, creating the tunnel while sections of casing pipe are pushed into place behind it.

Big.
Depending on location, the pipeline will measure approximately 3 to 5 feet in diameter. Earlier Tampa Bay Water project specifications described sections reaching as large as 72 inches.
That's infrastructure most residents will eventually never think about.
Once buried, there won't be much to see.
But the water moving through it will help serve communities across southern Hillsborough County for decades. And Yes — Construction Is Going to Be With Us for a While
This isn't a project that's going to disappear in a few months.
The current schedule calls for construction to continue through 2028, with the pipeline expected to enter service near the end of 2028.
Restoration work is expected to continue into the first half of 2029.
That means road closures, construction zones and detours may continue changing as crews progress along the route. Know Before You Go
For Brandon residents affected by construction:
Victoria Street: Open-trench construction continues eastward, generally Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Brandon High School: Follow posted pedestrian and bicycle detours. Parking-lot access remains available from the west via Limona Road and Meade Street.
September 9: North Knights and North Moon avenues are scheduled to close at Victoria Street.
September 9–10: Around-the-clock tunneling is scheduled beneath Brandon Boulevard at North and South Moon avenues.
Schedules can change because of weather, construction conditions or other factors.

Construction cones are frustrating.
Detours are inconvenient.
And nobody enjoys discovering that the road they normally use is suddenly closed.
But there's a much bigger story underneath all those barricades.
Brandon and southern Hillsborough County are growing, and infrastructure built for yesterday eventually has to prepare for tomorrow.
For the next couple of years, we'll see the construction.
Eventually, most of it will disappear underground. And that's exactly the point.
Long after the barricades are gone, millions of gallons of drinking water could be traveling underneath the roads we drive every day.
