Making a difference in a community doesn't always require

years of experience. Sometimes, it begins with a young person who sees an opportunity to help others.

Nariah Rivera, a fourth-grade student at Limona Elementary School in Brandon, has been recognized by Hillsborough County for her efforts to prevent bullying and encourage positive relationships among children.

At its October 7 meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners presented Nariah with the Anti-Bullying Emerging Leader Award.

Helping friendships grow

One of Nariah's projects involved developing an activity for the Smart Girls program, which helps girls overcome barriers that can make friendships difficult.

She also created age-appropriate activities to teach children about bullying prevention.

Her efforts extended into the arts. Working with an instructor at the Carey Family Boys & Girls Club,

Nariah helped develop an anti-bullying art show intended to educate others about bullying and ways to prevent it.

These projects demonstrate how creative activities can help children discuss difficult subjects in accessible ways.

Recognizing young leaders

Hillsborough County's annual Anti-Bullying

Recognition Awards highlight young people who work to reduce bullying in their communities.

Nariah was one of two recipients recognized this year.

The county also honored Plant High School senior Madden Moore for his anti-bullying leadership efforts.

According to the county's announcement, Nariah hopes to become a police officer in the future because she wants to help keep people safe.

A lesson beyond the classroom

Nariah's recognition is a reminder that students can contribute to a more welcoming environment through their own ideas and actions.

For Brandon, it is also an opportunity to celebrate a young resident whose work is receiving countywide attention.

Congratulations to Nariah Rivera on her recognition and her efforts to encourage kindness among her peers.
