A trip to the Tax Collector's office isn't exactly how most people hope to spend part of their day.

On Monday, however, some Brandon residents may be able to skip that trip altogether.

The Hillsborough County Tax Collector's MILES mobile service center is scheduled to stop in Brandon on Monday, September 21, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Cano Health, 823 S. Parsons Ave., Brandon.

MILES stands for Mobile IDs, Licenses & Essential Services, and that's exactly what the specially equipped unit is designed to provide: many of the services residents would ordinarily have to visit a Tax Collector location to complete.

What Can You Do There?

This isn't simply an information booth.

According to the Hillsborough County Tax Collector, residents visiting the Brandon MILES stop can handle several actual transactions, including:

• Driver licenses and identification cards
• Property tax payments
• Vehicle registration renewals
• Disabled parking placards
• Vehicle titles

And for this particular Brandon visit, no RSVP is required.

That makes the stop potentially useful for someone who has been putting off a registration renewal, needs an ID-related service or has another qualifying transaction to complete.

Bringing Government Services Into the Neighborhood

The idea behind MILES is relatively simple: instead of requiring every resident to come to a government office, bring the government office to some of them.

Tax Collector Nancy Millan's office describes the program as an additional way of reaching Hillsborough County residents in neighborhoods, senior centers, business districts and community spaces. The mobile unit complements the Tax Collector's existing physical offices and online services rather than replacing them.

Accessibility is also built into the vehicle.

The Brandon event listing says the unit includes an ADA-compliant ramp, wider entryways, lower counters and bilingual signage, with staff trained to assist seniors and people with disabilities.

That can make a significant difference for residents for whom transportation, mobility or navigating a traditional government office presents an additional challenge.

Don't Forget Your Documents

There's one important catch.

If you're going to MILES for a driver license or Florida identification card, don't simply show up and assume you'll have everything you need.

Florida has specific documentation requirements depending upon the type of credential or transaction involved. The Tax Collector's Office specifically advises residents to review the required identification documents before visiting and warns that staff cannot issue a credential without the proper documentation.

In other words, spending a few minutes checking the requirements before leaving home could prevent a wasted trip.
