Trivia Question❓

Brandon, Florida takes its name from a early settler, but which crop did that settler primarily cultivate, helping establish the area's agricultural identity in the late 19th century?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Joke Of The Day

People always ask if Brandon, Florida has a motto.

It does: "We're not Tampa, but we have their traffic."

There's encouraging news for Brandon motorists and businesses as crews working on the South Hillsborough Pipeline have completed a major construction milestone beneath Brandon Boulevard.

According to Tampa Bay Water's October 9 project update, the underground microtunnel installation beneath Brandon Boulevard is finished, and restoration work is now underway.

But while that phase of construction is complete, drivers should expect additional disruptions in the surrounding area over the coming weeks.

When Will Moon Avenue Reopen?

Project officials anticipate restoring access to North and South Moon avenues at Brandon Boulevard by early November, weather permitting.

However, construction along North Moon Avenue is expected to continue through late December.

The work involves installing pipeline sections through an open trench, with North Moon Avenue closed to through traffic between Victoria Street and Brandon Boulevard.

Local access arrangements may change as construction progresses. Drivers should follow posted detours and allow additional travel time.

Local Businesses Remain Open

One important message from project officials is that businesses along the construction corridor remain open and accessible.

Among the establishments highlighted by the South Hillsborough Pipeline project are Arnold Dentistry, Brandon Medical Center, and Nothing Like Us Detailing.

Construction can make familiar routes less convenient, but residents can continue supporting neighborhood businesses while work progresses.

What Is the South Hillsborough Pipeline?

The project is part of a major water infrastructure investment designed to expand the regional water supply system serving southern Hillsborough County.

The approximately 26-mile pipeline will connect regional water facilities and help deliver additional drinking water capacity to growing communities.

Construction is scheduled to continue into 2028, with restoration activities extending into 2029.

What Brandon Residents Should Know

Although the tunneling beneath Brandon Boulevard is complete, the surrounding work is not.

Residents traveling through the Moon Avenue corridor should watch for changing traffic patterns, temporary closures, and construction equipment.

For current construction notices, detour information, and project updates, visit:

https://southhillsboroughpipeline.com/detours-alerts/

Residents with questions can also contact the project team at 813-485-6480.

The bottom line: A significant portion of the Brandon Boulevard work has been completed, but patience and caution will still be needed as crews continue construction and restoration nearby.

Some of the most meaningful success stories begin close to home. For Valrico Elementary School teacher Sidney O'Sullivan, the journey from student to educator has brought her back to familiar faces, cherished memories, and a remarkable professional milestone.

O'Sullivan, a graduate of Hillsborough County Public Schools, was recently named Valrico Elementary School's Teacher of the Year, an honor that carries special significance because of her connection to the school's principal.

A Familiar Face Along the Way

As a child, O'Sullivan attended Bevis Elementary School, where Tricia Simonsen served as her principal.

After Bevis, she continued her education at Randall Middle School and Newsome High School before earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of South Florida.

Today, nine years into her teaching career, O'Sullivan works at Valrico Elementary under the leadership of that same principal, Tricia Simonsen.

It's an unusual full-circle moment: a former student has become an accomplished educator, and her childhood principal is there to celebrate her success.

A Classroom Surprise

The announcement of O'Sullivan's Teacher of the Year recognition came during what began as an ordinary math lesson.

School administrators, fellow teachers, and family members entered her classroom with music, applause, and decorations.

Among them was her 5-year-old son, Connor, who also attends Valrico Elementary.

Connor presented his mother with a certificate, while Principal Simonsen announced the recognition to the class.

For O'Sullivan, the presence of her family, colleagues, and students made the occasion especially meaningful.

Teaching Is About More Than Lessons

O'Sullivan has spent her entire nine-year teaching career at Valrico Elementary.

Her approach to education emphasizes building relationships with students and creating a classroom environment where children feel accepted, supported, and encouraged to grow.

She describes her classroom as a family, where learning extends beyond academics to include resilience, confidence, and personal development.

Outside the classroom, O'Sullivan also performs live music at local establishments, maintaining another connection with the community she calls home.

A Principal's Proud Moment

For Principal Simonsen, recognizing O'Sullivan represents more than celebrating an outstanding teacher.

She remembers O'Sullivan as a young student at Bevis Elementary and has now watched her develop into a dedicated professional.

Simonsen praised O'Sullivan's passion for teaching, commitment to her students, and contributions to the school community.

The recognition reflects both O'Sullivan's individual accomplishments and the lasting influence educators can have on the lives of their students.

A Story Worth Celebrating

In a community where teachers help shape the next generation, Sidney O'Sullivan's journey offers a reminder that the influence of a good school can extend far beyond graduation.

From a Bevis Bronco to a Valrico Hawk, her story has come full circle.

And for the students sitting in her classroom today, her example may be planting the seeds for future educators who will one day serve the same community.

Congratulations to Sidney O'Sullivan on being named Valrico Elementary School's Teacher of the Year.

Valrico Elementary School is located at 609 S. Miller Road, Valrico, Florida.

In a community where new restaurants seem to appear every year, there's something special about a place that has been serving its neighbors for more than four decades.

For Brandon residents, Jesse's Steak and Seafood is one of those places.

Located along West Brandon Boulevard, Jesse's has been part of the local dining scene since 1980.

Through years of growth and change throughout the Brandon area, the family-owned restaurant has continued to focus on the traditional steakhouse experience that established its name.

A Brandon Tradition Since 1980

When Jesse's opened its doors in 1980, Brandon was a considerably smaller community than it is today.

Over the decades, shopping centers, residential neighborhoods, and businesses have transformed the area. Yet Jesse's has remained at its familiar location on Brandon Boulevard.

The restaurant's approach centers on traditional American steakhouse cooking, featuring USDA Choice beef hand-cut in-house, seafood selections, and recipes prepared in its own kitchen.

Rather than reinventing itself around the latest dining trends, Jesse's continues to offer a familiar menu and casual setting.

What's on the Menu?

Steaks are a central part of the Jesse's experience.

The restaurant offers charbroiled beef selections, including ribeye and other traditional steakhouse cuts.

Another longstanding specialty is its slow-roasted prime rib, available in different portions and served with classic accompaniments.

Seafood lovers have choices as well, including shrimp, cod, and salmon prepared in several styles.

The menu extends beyond steak and seafood, with burgers, sandwiches, salads, and other familiar dishes.

Among the restaurant's distinctive offerings is the Jesse's Special, a combination of charbroiled beef, sautéed mushrooms, bacon, grilled onions, provolone cheese, and fresh toppings.

Lunch selections provide additional options for those stopping in during the workday.

Keeping the Neighborhood Steakhouse Tradition Alive

Part of Jesse's identity is its straightforward, casual approach to dining.

It's the kind of restaurant where the menu emphasizes recognizable favorites rather than elaborate presentations.

For longtime Brandon residents, a business that has operated since 1980 represents a connection to an earlier chapter of the community's history.

For newer residents, it's an opportunity to discover one of the local establishments that helped shape Brandon's restaurant landscape.

Planning Your Visit

Jesse's operates on a walk-in basis and does not accept reservations or call-ahead seating.

The restaurant asks that everyone in your party be present before being seated.

Its published hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Visitors should check the restaurant's website for updates before heading out.

A Familiar Name on Brandon Boulevard

Brandon has changed tremendously since 1980, and its restaurant scene continues to evolve.

But Jesse's Steak and Seafood remains a reminder that some local businesses become part of a community's identity simply by continuing to serve it, year after year.

Whether you're a longtime customer or someone who has passed its sign countless times without stopping,

Jesse's offers a chance to experience a piece of Brandon's dining history.

Halloween is often associated with black cats, costumes, and a little spooky fun. But this Saturday in Valrico, black cats will take center stage for a much more meaningful reason: helping homeless kittens find a better future.

On Saturday, October 24, A Kitten Place Rescue will host its Sixth Annual Black Cat 5K Fun Run & Walk in the Twin Lakes neighborhood of Valrico.

The family-friendly event combines exercise, community spirit, and Halloween festivities while raising support for cats and kittens in need.

A Morning of Fun for a Good Cause

Participants can choose between an untimed 5K run and a more relaxed one-mile walk around the neighborhood lake.

You don't have to be an experienced runner to participate. The event is designed to welcome families, walkers, casual joggers, and animal lovers who simply want to support a worthwhile cause.

Registration and check-in begin at 7:30 a.m., with both the 5K and one-mile walk starting at 8:15 a.m.

The celebration doesn't end at the finish line.

Organizers have planned music, refreshments, raffles, a silent auction, awards, and a Halloween costume contest for both people and pets.

Registered participants can also receive an event T-shirt, finisher medal, and goodie bag, with some items available while supplies last.

Helping Kittens Who Need a Second Chance

A Kitten Place Rescue works to help homeless cats and kittens, including vulnerable animals that need care before they can find permanent homes.

Fundraising events such as the Black Cat 5K provide an opportunity for residents to support that work while learning more about the needs of rescue animals in the community.

The event also offers a reminder that helping animals doesn't always require adopting a pet. Community support, donated supplies, fundraising, and volunteer involvement all have a role to play.

Bring a Donation and Help Even More

Participants and visitors are encouraged to bring donations of cat litter or cat and kitten toys.

Both clumping and non-clumping litter are accepted.

Those who bring eligible supplies can receive an entry into a special raffle drawing. Winners must be present to claim their prizes.

It's a simple way to provide practical support for rescued animals while enjoying the morning's activities.

Can't Make the Run? There's Another Option

Organizers are also offering a virtual Black Cat 5K for supporters who would prefer to participate on their own schedule.

Virtual participants can complete their activity at a time and place that works for them while supporting the same cause.

For those attending in person, an early packet pickup is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Fit2Run in Brandon Mall.

A Community Coming Together for Cats

The Black Cat 5K is about more than finishing a race.

It's an opportunity for neighbors to come together, enjoy a festive morning, and support animals that depend on community generosity.

Whether you're running the 5K, strolling around the lake, donating supplies, or cheering on participants, the event offers several ways to make a difference.

And with Halloween just around the corner, there's no better time to show a little extra love to our feline friends.

Sometimes, the most interesting pieces of local history turn up in the most unexpected places.

For Brandon, one such discovery recently began with an ordinary donation to ECHO Thrift. What might have become another item for sale instead turned into an opportunity to preserve a tangible connection to the family whose name our community carries.

The discovery was a handmade item created by Otis L. Brandon, a descendant of one of Brandon's early families.

Thanks to a little curiosity and cooperation among local organizations, the item has found its way into the care of people dedicated to preserving Brandon's past.

An Unexpected Discovery at ECHO Thrift

When the handmade item arrived at ECHO Thrift, staff members recognized that it might have historical significance.

Rather than placing it on a shelf for resale, the organization decided to investigate its origins.

ECHO contacted the Brandon Riverview Chamber of Commerce, which helped connect the thrift store with Preserving Brandon, a nonprofit organization devoted to protecting and sharing the community's history.

That connection helped establish the item's relationship to the Brandon family.

Instead of selling it, ECHO arranged for the item to be donated to Preserving Brandon, where its history could be documented and shared with future generations.

Who Was Otis L. Brandon?

Otis L. Brandon was born on April 1, 1929, and belonged to the extended family whose history is closely tied to the development of Brandon.

According to Preserving Brandon, Otis was a descendant of James Henry Brandon, the fourth child of John Brandon and Martha Brown Carson.

James Henry Brandon built the historic Brandon Homestead in 1876.

That property, located along what is now State Road 60, later became associated with Stowers Funeral Home.

The homestead remains an important connection to Brandon's early settlement and the family whose name became part of the community's identity.

Although the recently discovered handmade item may appear modest, its significance comes from its connection to this history.

It offers a personal reminder that Brandon's past is not found only in old buildings and historical records.

Sometimes it survives through objects created and used by the people who lived here.

Three Organizations, One Shared Purpose

The discovery also illustrates how community partnerships can protect local history.

ECHO Thrift recognized the potential importance of the item.

The Brandon Riverview Chamber of Commerce helped connect the right people.

And Preserving Brandon provided a place where the artifact could be preserved as part of the community's historical record.

Each organization played a different role, but together they helped prevent a meaningful piece of Brandon's heritage from disappearing into an ordinary resale transaction.

A Future Home at the Brandon Library

The story may eventually have another chapter.

Preserving Brandon has partnered with the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library system on plans to display local historical materials at the new Brandon Library.

The organization anticipates having a dedicated display shelf where items connected to Brandon's past can be shared with the public.

The handmade item created by Otis L. Brandon is the kind of historical artifact that could become part of that effort.

A display date has not yet been announced.

For residents, such a collection would offer an opportunity to see pieces of local history that might otherwise remain tucked away in private collections, storage boxes, or family keepsakes.

Why Preserving Brandon's History Matters

Brandon has changed dramatically since its earliest days.

Roads, neighborhoods, shopping centers, and businesses now occupy land that once supported a much smaller community.

As the area continues to grow, preserving its history becomes increasingly important.

Organizations such as Preserving Brandon work to keep those stories alive, connecting today's residents with the people, places, and events that shaped the community.

And sometimes, preserving that history begins with something as simple as recognizing that an old handmade object deserves a closer look.

A Treasure Worth Keeping

The journey of Otis L. Brandon's handmade item—from a thrift-store donation to a historical preservation effort—is a reminder that the past can still surprise us.

It also demonstrates what can happen when neighbors and local organizations recognize the value of their shared heritage.

What began as an ordinary donation has become another small but meaningful chapter in Brandon's continuing story.

Because sometimes, preserving a community's future begins with remembering its past.
