Matt Chaney, owner of Grand Oaks Tree Service, and his crew were on the job when a woman came running toward them, screaming frantically.

She didn't speak English — but her panic said everything.

Chaney followed her and discovered a man pinned under a vehicle, visible only by his legs, after a jack apparently slipped on a slope.

Without hesitation, the crew grabbed a jack, collected cinder blocks, and maneuvered their Bobcat machine to catch the truck's bumper — raising it just six to eight inches.

That small gap was enough to pull the man free.

Paramedics transported him to a hospital, though his condition was not publicly released.

The crew wasn't there to perform a rescue — they were simply there when somebody needed one.

For many Brandon families, caregiving begins not with a plan, but with a moment — a parent forgetting things, a spouse who can no longer be left alone.

Hillsborough County is offering a free Caregiver Support Group meeting this Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Bloomingdale Senior Center, 3940 Canoga Park Drive in Brandon, starting at 10 a.m.

This month's focus is Adult Day Services — programs helping older adults stay home longer while giving family caregivers much-needed relief.

The county's adult day programs serve residents 60 and older, offering meals, medication assistance, therapeutic activities, and social-work counseling.

In-home support is also available for eligible seniors, including personal care, homemaking, and meal delivery — all on a sliding income scale.

Brandon teen Lilly Belle Nimmo, 17, has earned the Stars & Stripes Award — the highest honor offered by American Heritage Girls — after completing more than 100 hours of service at Hope for Her, a Brandon nonprofit supporting women in crisis.

To qualify, Lilly had to earn 13 required badges, hold a troop leadership role, write an essay, gather references, and plan, develop and lead her own service project.

She chose Hope for Her, located at 140 Yarbrough Road in Brandon, where she helped create a calmer, more welcoming environment for women arriving during some of their hardest moments.

After fulfilling her requirements, she kept coming back — volunteering roughly three hours a week, sorting donations and supporting daily operations.

A high-school senior dual-enrolled at Hillsborough College, Lilly also competes in speech and debate and serves as a Phi Theta Kappa chapter secretary.

She will be formally recognized at a Court of Honor at Hope for Her on September 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Along Brandon Boulevard, amid the traffic, shopping centers, and highway sprawl, something extraordinary has quietly survived — nearly 15 acres of old Florida surrounding a home built in 1886.

It's called the Moseley Homestead, and it's one of the most remarkable pieces of living history in Hillsborough County.

Julia and Charles Moseley established the property in the 1880s, naming their home "The Nest" and the surrounding wooded land "The Timberly."

Julia was an artist whose palmetto-fiber wall covering was displayed at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Her granddaughter, Julia Winifred Moseley, lived at the homestead until her death in 2020 at age 101, spending decades preserving the family's letters, artwork, and history.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985, the site now has $1.65 million in county funding for renovations — and is even being documented using 3-D and virtual-reality technology.

Modern Brandon grew all around it. The Nest never moved.

La Septima Cafe has been a fixture in Brandon for 31 years — and its story is as rich as its food.

Ronnie and Dahlia Fernandez opened the restaurant on Feb. 9, 1995, starting small on Parsons Avenue with one dining room, a handful of employees, and a lot of hope.

Named after Seventh Avenue — Ybor City's historic main street — the cafe was built to honor the family's immigrant roots, serving Cuban, Spanish, and Italian-influenced dishes like ropa vieja, picadillo, and lechón asado.

By 2011, the restaurant had outgrown its original home and relocated to 702 W. Lumsden Road, where it now seats over 100 guests.

The business survived COVID-19 by pivoting to takeout and family meals — adaptations that remain part of operations today.

Now spanning three generations of the Fernandez family, La Septima is open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m.–8 p.m., offering dine-in, takeout, delivery, and catering.

Sassy Cat Club Cafe on West Lumsden Road in Brandon is doing something quietly remarkable — giving homeless cats a cozy living room to find their forever families.

Owner Nicole Duffey, a certified veterinary technician with 30 years of experience, opened the café in March 2023 using her retirement savings.

She partnered with A Kitten Place, a 100% volunteer-run, foster-based local rescue, to give adoptable cats something traditional shelters rarely offer — time and space to just be themselves.

Visitors can watch cats lounge, play, and warm up on their own terms, giving prospective adopters a real sense of each animal's personality before committing.

The results speak for themselves — nearly 700 adoptions in just over two years.

Even non-adopters are welcome. Admission runs $15 for one hour or $10 for a 30-minute drop-in, with beverages available. Sassy Cat Club Cafe is located at 735 W. Lumsden Road, Brandon.

Summer isn't quite ready to let go of Brandon.

The week kicks off warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms expected Tuesday through Friday.

Tuesday poses the biggest concern, as locally heavy downpours could leave standing water on area roads — and lightning can develop fast with Florida storms.

Highs will hover near 89–90°F to start, before gradually easing as the week winds down.

Relief arrives by the weekend. Saturday looks drier and more comfortable, making it the better bet for outdoor plans.

By Sunday and Monday, afternoon highs should settle into the mid-80s — a small but welcome nudge toward fall.

The National Weather Service reminds residents that late September in this part of Florida typically stays warm and humid well into October, so don't put those umbrellas away just yet.
